Dowsing (water witching)
A rod or pendulum is said to react over water. Controlled trials repeatedly show results no better than chance, and there is no proposed physical mechanism. It remains the most common reason a borewell comes up dry, because it produces a confident answer with no evidence behind it.
Electrical resistivity survey
Current is injected into the ground and the resistance profile is measured. Saturated and fractured zones conduct differently from dry rock, so this genuinely maps the subsurface. It is the right final check before spending money on a deep bore — but it needs equipment, a crew, a site visit and a fee for each point tested.
Seismic refraction
Sound waves are timed through rock layers to map depth to bedrock and weathered zones. Accurate and widely used in engineering, but slower and more expensive than resistivity, and usually overkill for a single domestic well.
Test drilling
The only method that gives certainty, because it is the outcome you are trying to predict. It is also the thing you are trying not to waste money on, which is why the other methods exist.
